B.Ed (Hons) Elementary

Introduction

Education is a growing sector which requires dealing and educating students with different learning capabilities/styles, and offers an exciting career with its own challenges and rewards. Elementary education is the first phase of education usually preceded by nursery or Montessori school education and followed by middle and secondary school education. In Elementary education, children are usually engaged in classes with one teacher, who becomes responsible for their education and well-being for the entire academic year. The continuity with a single teacher and the opportunity to build a close relationship within the class is a distinguishing characteristic of Elementary education. The teacher guides the students based on his/her abilities, competency and knowledge and becomes an ideal role model for the students. The basic objective of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Elementary) program is to equip prospective teachers with teaching tools and an in-depth knowledge of tomorrow’s educational challenges. Virtual University of Pakistan aims at developing dynamic and skilled elementary school teachers fluent in the use of latest technologies and well-versed with the latest advancements in knowledge and pedagogy.

Program Objectives

After completing the Bachelors of Education (hons) degree, the prospective teachers will:

  • develop an understanding of the psychology of young learners;
  • foster creative thinking among their pupils for construction of knowledge;
  • develop communication skills and use modern information technology for school teaching;
  • acquire competencies relevant to subject specific pedagogy, curriculum development, its transaction and evaluation;
  • make pedagogical analysis of the subjects they are to teach at the elementary stage;
  • develop positive attitude to teaching profession;
  • use innovative methods of teaching.

Admission Eligibility Criteria

Intermediate (12 years of education)/ A- Level or equivalent qualification with at-least 45% marks

Note

  • Candidates having ‘A’ level or Deeni Asnad or foreign qualification are required to provide equivalence certificate from IBCC or HEC, Islamabad as applicable.
  • Candidates having less than 45% marks in Intermediate or equivalent qualification will be eligible for admission after the successful completion of “Zero  Semester”.

BS Entry Route:

Applicants having B.A./B.Sc./Associate Degree (14 years of education) from an HEC recognized university / institute with at-least 45% marks or CGPA 2.00 out 4.0 are eligible for course exemption (as determined by the Equivalence Committee of VU). However, applicants shall meet admission entry requirements based on their 12 years of education as stated above.

Course exemption is allowed.

Duration

It is a four-year full time study program spread over eight semesters. Each semester has at least 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations etc.

Assessment of Study Progress

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term exams including teaching practicum for B.Ed. (Hons) Elementary. The mid-term and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Teaching Practices

Students are required to complete the teaching practice of 15 credit hours during B Ed. Hons. Elementary (4 years) program.

Research Project

Research Project of 6 credit hours is a compulsory requirement for the completion of the degree. Students may select research topics of their choice with the approval of the student advisor/ supervisor. Students have to submit a detailed write-up of the Project and may be required to give a presentation.

Award of Degree

From Fall 2021, to be eligible for the award of B.Ed. (Hons) Elementary degree the students are required to complete at least 145 credit hours with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 out of 4.
Whereas, for all previously enrolled batches, the students are required to complete at least 140~142 credit hours with minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 out of 4.00
