POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING (ELT)

Introduction

Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in English Language Teaching (ELT) is a one year (30CH) program that has been designed for all those students who intend to enhance their teaching skills or knowledge or apply for a master’s program in ELT or any other related field. It will provide a baseline to the students who graduated in another field and intend to change their field of study. In case of pursuing higher degree i.e., MA ELT etc., students may apply for course exemption in VU on the basis of PGD ELT.

PGD ELT provides the participants with a range of practical skills required to start a career in teaching English. This diploma program will help students to get training, improve their teaching skills and familiarize themselves with the latest teaching methods and strategies. The program aims to develop their knowledge and understanding of English language with a specific focus on language learning theories, second language teaching methods, curriculum and syllabus design, designing classroom activities and testing and assessment procedures.

Program Objectives

The program aims to:

  1. Provide fresh graduates and English language teachers an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of English language teaching from both theoretical and practical perspectives in order to examine, understand and research the problems related to ELT in Pakistan.
  2. Facilitate students to learn and apply effective pedagogical approaches and tools for teaching the core language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in their respective teaching/ learning scenarios.
  3. Equip the students with the techniques and tools for teaching English as a second Language.
  4. Furnish an understanding of the standard procedures of curricula and syllabi design and development.
  5. Enable learners to consider how materials are developed for teaching language in an interactive and communicative style.
  6. Enable them to comprehend the standard assessment procedures to meet the demands of on-going assessments in semester systems by developing their expertise in designing and conducting current testing techniques.

Admission Eligibility Criteria

BA/ B.Sc. or equivalent relevant qualification with ‘English’ as a compulsory/ optional subject with at least 45% marks or CGPA 2.00 out of 4 from HEC recognized university/institution.

Course Exemption

Course exemption is not allowed.

Duration

It is a one-year program divided into two semesters with five courses in each semester. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.

Assessment of Study Progress

The students’ study progress evaluation is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester through assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Discussion Board (GDB), mid-term and final term exams.

Award of Diploma

To be eligible for the award of Post Graduate Diploma in ELT, students are required to complete course work program (minimum two semesters) of at least 30 credit hours with minimum CGPA 2.00 out of 4.
