Introduction

The Department of Bioinformatics & Computational Biology focuses on the improvement and development of computational approaches to deal with biological problems and provide extraordinary opportunities to train students in the areas of Genomics, Proteomics and Systems Biology. The Department in this way is committed to the development and utilization of novel computational approaches to help solve important biological problems, in addition to providing training in basic and applied science that underlies them. The Department provides help and guidance to the students through tutorial/ interactive sessions to understand and clarify various concepts, terminologies relating regular courses and their research/ proejct work. The Research in the Bioinformatics & Computational Biology is multifaceted with major focus in the areas of Genomics, Proteomics, Cancer Biology, Next Generation Sequencing, System Biology, Molecular Evolution and Microbial genomics. In addition to providing theoretical knowledge, the Department strives to provide the facility of practical training to students at their doorsteps through physical labs, mobile lab and smart labs.

The Department of Bioinformatics & Computational Biology upholds a mission of excellence in education, research and service in the emerging fields of bioinformatics and computational biology. Under the flagship of Virtual University of Pakistan, this interdisciplinary research institute supporting high-performance computing research across the country. The department’s curriculum prepares students for careers in 21st century medical research and entrepreneurship in biotechnology. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology include multiple areas in computer science, including algorithms for combinatorial optimization, machine learning, data management, and scientific computing. The Department of Bioinformatics & Computational Biology is organized as a center within the Virtual University of Pakistan, an interdisciplinary research institute supporting high computing research.
