Introduction

The BS Islamic Studies program at the Virtual University of Pakistan is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Islamic disciplines, blending traditional knowledge with modern professional skills. The program offers an in-depth study of core Islamic subjects such as the Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Sirah, and the methodologies of Tafsir and Hadith compilation. Alongside this, the curriculum is carefully structured to integrate contemporary skills, including digital literacy, communication and writing. This dual focus ensures that graduates are not only well-versed in Islamic teachings but also equipped with the practical tools necessary to address the complex challenges of today's society.

In addition to academic rigor, the BS Islamic Studies program emphasizes the development of ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Students are encouraged to analyze diverse perspectives, promote social inclusivity, and uphold the ethics of disagreement, thereby fostering a spirit of peaceful coexistence in a diverse society. The program also prepares students to apply Islamic principles to modern issues in areas such as economics, science, and cultural interactions, ensuring a balanced approach to contemporary trends and the comparative study of world religions. With a strong emphasis on research, professionalism, and personal development, graduates of this program will be well-rounded individuals capable of making meaningful contributions to various professional sectors, including teaching, research, and innovation. The online mode of learning further enhances the program's accessibility, flexibility, and relevance in a globalized world.

Objectives

1: To Develop a strong foundation for ethical and responsible citizenship, fostering social inclusivity, ethical practices, and peaceful coexistence in a diverse society through engagement with Pakistani history, ideology, Islamic principles, human rights and analysis of diverse cultural expressions.

2: To Develop and apply foundational professional skills in digital literacy, communication, writing, and entrepreneurship to facilitate lifelong learning and career development.

3: To demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and profound understanding of Islamic disciplines like Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Sirah and the methodologies of compilation of Tafsir and Hadith, including their foundational principles, integrating contemporary knowledge to broaden their perspectives on Islamic teachings with understanding of the contemporary world.

4: To apply Islamic teachings to modern challenges, addressing issues in economics, science, and cultural interactions. They will promote ethical reasoning, respect for diverse perspectives, and the objectives of Shari'ah, fostering a balanced approach to modern trends and the comparative study of world religions, while upholding the ethics of disagreement in Islam.

5: To cultivate a research-oriented mindset in students, equipping them with advanced skills for conducting objective research in Islamic studies, while fostering ethical values, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity. This includes promoting critical thinking and reasoning skills to analyze diverse perspectives, solve complex problems, thereby deterring sectarianism, extremism, and reactionary viewpoints.

6: To demonstrate professional conduct and effective collaboration through integrity, time management, communication, teamwork, and self-efficacy.

Eligibility Criteria

Intermediate (12 years of education)/ A- Level or equivalent qualification with at-least 45% marks

Note: Candidates having ‘A’ level or Deeni Asnad (Shadah Khassah) or foreign qualification are required to provide equivalence certificate from IBCC or HEC, Islamabad as applicable.

Assessment Criteria

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDB), mid-term and final-term exams. The mid and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated exam centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Award of Degree

To become eligible for the award of BS Islamic Studies degree, the student is required to complete prescribed course work of 124 credit hours with a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 2.0 out of 4.

Project / Internship / Practicals

Both the "Capstone Project/Thesis" and "Internship/Field Study" are Compulsory.

Internship/Field Study

The students are required to complete an Internship/field study of one month duration in 5th semester. (Weekly Report will be submitted)

Capstone Project/Thesis 

Students are required to complete a Capstone Project of 3 credit hours in the last semester. The students have to submit a detailed write-up/report of the Capstone Project followed by the viva voice.

Note: Evaluation of the "Capstone Project/Thesis" and "Internship/Field Study" will be based on pass/fail criteria and will not affect a student's CGPA. However, being a compulsory requirement, it is necessary to pass "Capstone Project/Thesis" and "Internship/Field Study" to fulfill the requirements of the degree program.
