Associate Degree Programs (Associate Degree in Psychology)

Introduction

The Associate Degree in Psychology is a regular 2-year degree program which has been designed to equip the students with requisite knowledge and skills which would help them taking an early start of their professional career so that they can earn their livings and support their families too.

Note: Candidates holding Associate Degree can continue towards respective BS 4-year degree program. Or the student can apply for new admission towards any BS 4-Year degree program (Subject to admission eligibility with exemption/transfer of relevant qualified courses) as per policy.

Objectives

Following are the main objectives of the Program:

  • To provide a strong theoretical basis about the principles, history, and research approaches in Psychology;
  • To equip students with conceptual tools and scientific knowledge about human existence in general;
  • To articulate how psychological principles can be used to explain and understand the dynamics of social and psychological issues.

Eligibility Criteria

Intermediate (equivalent to 12 years of education) with at least 45% marks

Note

  • Candidates having ‘A’ levels are required to provide equivalence certificate from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Islamabad. (http://www.ibcc.edu.pk/
  • Candidates having 33% ~44% marks will be eligible for admission after the successful completion of “Zero Semester”.

Assessment Criteria

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GDB), mid-term and final-term exams. The mid and final term exams are conducted at VUP’s designated exam centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Award of Degree

It is a two-year full time study program spread over four semesters. Each semester has at least 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations etc.

Minimum: 2-Years / 4 semesters

Maximum: 4-years / 8 semesters

Maximum time duration includes semester freeze period.

  • To be eligible for the of Associate Degree in Psychology, the students are required to earn prescribed 68 credit hours with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 out of 4.

Project / Internship / Practicals

Both community work Project (PSY312) and internship (PSYi619) are mandatory for the completion and award of Associate Degree in Psychology.

In order to enroll for Community Work (PSY312) course, students must have:

              i.        Achieved a CGPA of 2.0 or higher.

             ii.        Earned 30 or more credit hours.

 Rules of Community Work Project:

  • Must be enrolled in Associate Degree Program
  • Must undergo a 4 to 6 weeks volunteer work with the deprived and vulnerable groups of their communities such as in any NGO, NGO based projects, or Schools dealing with Special children, approved by the course instructor/supervisor.
  • Will be required to submit a valid proposal, which will be approved by the concerned authorities after careful scrutiny. After the approval of the authorities students will complete community work in selected NGO/organization/hospital etc. And submit a detailed write-up of the Community Work project (report).
  • Student will give a viva presentation.

(Note: students are required to be in contact with their supervisor/instructor via email/Skype and attend regular sessions. Evaluation of the course “Community Work" will be non-graded and based on pass/fail criteria. However, being a compulsory requirement, it is necessary to pass this course and appear in viva to fulfill the requirements of the degree program. Rules may be modified or revised time to time considering new policies).

In Internship Report (PSYI619), students are required to complete 6-8 weeks internship in any organization (Psychiatric clinic/School) and shall get an Internship Letter from the concerned organization. A. Students shall get Internship Completion Certificate issued by concerned organization. Students will submit a detailed internship report and will give a viva presentation.

(Note: Evaluation of the course "Project" / "Internship Report" will be based on pass/fail criteria and will not affect a student's CGPA. However, being a compulsory requirement, it is necessary to pass this course to fulfill the requirements of the degree program).
