BS Sociology

About the Program

Department of Sociology offers an opportunity to students as well as professionals in the field of Sociology as per progressive requirements and challenges of the contemporary world through its 4-year Bachelors program. During the duration of the program, students are exposed to diverse subjects with distinct knowledge and skills that enable them to develop a critical thinking towards the institutions, systems and working of societal elements.

Program Objectives

BS Sociology program aims to:

  • Equip the students with conceptual tools, scientific knowledge and practical skills to gain a deeper understanding of social world in general.
  • Enhance the ability of the students to interpret the dynamics of varying human behavior and society in a wider context
  • Articulate how sociological principles can be used to explain and understand the dynamics of social issues and their consequent possible solutions.
  • Train the students practically and make them capable of applying sociological approaches to redefine the national goals for a sustainable and progressive Pakistan.

  • Admission Requirements

    Intermediate e.g. FA/F.Sc. (equivalent to 12 years of education) with at least 45% marks.

    Candidates having ‘A’ levels are required to provide equivalence certificate from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Islamabad. ( http://www.ibcc.edu.pk/)

    Candidates having less than 45% marks will be eligible for admission after the successful completion of “Zero Semester” .

    Course Exemption

    The candidates having 14-years of education (holding BA/ B.Sc./ B.Com. Associate Degree or Equivalent and above degree) with at least 45% marks or CGPA 2.0 out of 4 may apply for admission based on course exemption through BS Entry Route towards 4-years BS degree program. The study scheme and resident time of degree completion will be determined by the Equivalence Committee of the University keeping in view the deficiency (ies), if any. Whereas the minimum resident time for completion of degree program shall not be less than two years.

    Duration of BS Sociology

    It is a four-year study program spread over eight semesters. Each semester has at least 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations etc.

    Assessment of Study Progress

    The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDB), mid-term and final-term exams. The mid and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated exam centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

    Project/Internship

    `

    The students are required to complete a Project/Internship Report in the final semester of the Program. The choice of the Final Project is at the student’s discretion. However, consultation with the student advisor is compulsory. The students have to submit a detailed write-up of the Project and may be required to give a presentation

    The students taking Internship course are required to complete 6 to 8 weeks internship in the organization and shall get an Internship Letter from the concerned organization. Both Project and Internship are mandatory for the completion and award of BS Sociology degree.

    Award of Degree

    To become eligible for the award of BS Sociology degree, the students are required to complete prescribed course work of 134 credit hours with a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 2.0 out of 4.
