M.Sc. Mathematics

Introduction

M.Sc. Mathematics is 2-year program which has been designed especially for those who wish to enter this highly exciting and challenging field to meet the growing need of mathematics in the rapidly evolving 21st century job market. The program provides a strong base that will enable the graduates to capitalize on the increasing career opportunities in this sector. This specialization provides a highly demanded expertise, great mobility, flexibility, and an impressive range of possible career choices in this area.

Program Objectives

  • To produce trained human resource in mathematics for institutions of higher learning in the country.
  • To initiate, promote and foster research in various disciplines of mathematics.
  • To produce trained human resource that can work as researchers in industries/ or research institutions.

Admission Eligibility Criteria

Candidates having B.Sc. with Mathematics ‘A’ & Mathematics ‘B’ courses (bachelor’s degree 14-year education) with at least 45% marks in annual system or CGPA 2.00 out of 4 in semester system.

Note:

  • VU graduates holding 2-year degree are allowed only to continue in their respective 4-year BS study programs.
  • Zero Semester is not applicable for M.Sc. Mathematics Program.

Course Exemption

Course(s) exemption is not allowed.

Duration

It is a two-year duration program spread over four semesters. Each semester has at least 18 weeks duration.

Project

Students are required to complete a project of 6 credit hours in the last semester. They have to submit a detailed write-up of the project and may be required to give a presentation. The activity will actually establishes a foundation for the students regarding their future research in the field of mathematics.

Assessment of Study Progress

The students' study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final-term exams. The mid- term and final-term exams are conducted at VU's designated exam centers.

Award of Degree

To become eligible for the award of M.Sc. Mathematics degree, students are required to complete prescribed courses amounting to at least 66 credit hours with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 of 4.
