Department of English Conducts Book Bang Session with Ms. Salma Awan (Columnist & Educationist)

The seventh session of Book Bang was organized by the Department of English on July 26, 2017. The Department invited Ms. Salma Awan, a renowned Urdu novelist, story writer, travelogue writer, columnist and educationist, as a guest speaker for the session. The theme of the session was ‘The Contemporary Trends in Urdu Literature.’ Ms. Talaat Mariyam (Instructor English) introduced the speaker and read a review by Ms. Bushra Ejaz on Ms. Salma’s writings. Ms. Salma started her session by appreciating VUP’s contributions in the field of education. Later, she highlighted the contributions of Muslim rulers in the development and growth of Islamic Art & Literature. She also explained the importance of keeping one’s customs, traditions and civilization alive through literature. She laid great stress on the importance of developing reading habits and teaching our national language to the new generation. Furthermore, she shared her vast experience of travelling across various countries of the world including Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Italy, India, Turkey, and Sri Lanka.  Her story telling mode sharing rich memories of those countries, their cultures and civilizations was really delightful for the audience. They participated actively and asked different questions related to her travelling experience, reading and writing habits.  She also gave some guidelines to the aspiring writers. At the end of the session, Ms Ayesha Perveen (Head Department of Social Sciences & Humanities) presented a souvenir to the guest speaker and thanked her for sparing time out of her busy routine.  

Faculty members from the Department of English stationed at Rawalpindi and Faisalabad campuses also attended the session through video link. The participants appreciated the effort of the Department of English and suggested that such healthy and useful sessions should be continued in future for intellectual enlightenment.
